2017 Great Read-a-Thon!

Hi, kids. Welcome to this year’s installment of The Great Read-a-Thon! This is a reading competition where adult ass men and women battle with each other to see who can read the most books in a single calendar year for guts, glory, and bragging rights.

Last year, we opened up the 2016 Great Read-a-Thon to several people (22 counts as several, right?) and we had great results - many people read more than they thought they would (and some even wrote about it!), egged on by their competitive spirit! Ultimately, that’s the goal, right? We wanted to do that again, but this time, we have a form to fill out that will make managing all the participants a bit easier.

Using the form is simple. Select your name from the name multiple choice menu (or enter in your name if it’s your first book and you’re registering to compete) and input the following information:
  • Book Title
  • Book Author
  • Date Finished
  • OPTIONAL: Rate the book you read on a 1 to 5 scale.

Then, click submit. The information is sent to us and we’ll update the sheet for the month. This makes it much easier for us to track and it also gives us a chance to give you, the readers, a little bit of book data at the end of the year. Who doesn’t love some statistics and a possible colored chart?

RULES, RULES, RULES
In any competition, we need a few ground rules. Here’s what’s up for 2017:
1. The entire book must be read. That means no individual chapters, no partial plays, no individual short stories, and definitely no academic papers. We would like the focus to be on reading this year, so we will also not be counting graphic novels or comic books.

2. Young adult fiction counts, but children’s books do not. If it’s aimed for people over 12 and it’s more than 150 pages, you’re good.

3. You can re-read books, but you can’t have read that book in the last 5 years.

4. All participants must have indicated their interest by January 15th, 2017.

5. All participants should fill out the form by the 5th of the following month for each individual book read. This means all your January books need to be entered in the form by February 5th so we can update the blog page.

6. To sign up, you just need to log your first book on the form by February 5th, 2017. Once you have one book recorded, we’ll add you to the tally section on this page and update the form with your name so you can select it!

Annndddd. . .that’s it! Have fun, read voraciously, and may the odds be ever in your favor. But mostly in our favor because we’re writing this.

Love,
Ariana and Kristen
